7 relationship dilemmas with no right answer

Advice columns make relationships sound simple. Real ones are full of moments where honesty, loyalty and your own needs pull in different directions. Pick what you would actually do, not what sounds best.

Dilemma 1

The lit-up phone

Your partner is out of the room, and their phone lights up with a message from a name you don't recognize.

Do you look, ask them about it later, or trust and say nothing?

Dilemma 2

The old flame

An ex you haven't spoken to in years messages to say they're in town and would like to catch up. You're happily committed.

Do you tell your partner before replying, reply and mention it after, or ignore it?

Dilemma 3

The uneven effort

You are the one who plans the dates, texts first and remembers the important days. Your partner is kind, but rarely does the same.

Do you say it out loud, keep giving, or step back and see if they notice?

Dilemma 4

The move

Your partner gets a career-defining offer in another city. Going means leaving your job and your friends behind.

Do you go, ask them to stay, or try to make the distance work?

Dilemma 5

The unwanted gift

Your partner proudly gives you an expensive gift that you will never use. They clearly put thought into it.

Do you tell them the truth gently, or say you love it?

Dilemma 6

The friend's warning

Your closest friend tells you, carefully, that they don't think your partner is good for you.

Do you take it seriously, defend your partner, or keep some distance from your friend?

Dilemma 7

The silent standoff

After an argument where you were both partly wrong, two days have passed and neither of you has spoken first.

Do you apologize first, wait for them, or bring it up as a problem you share?

What your answers hint at

If you lean toward speaking up, you probably trust that a relationship can survive honesty, and you'd rather clear the air than let something sit. If you lean toward waiting or staying quiet, you may value calm and timing, and you'd rather pick your moment than force one.

Neither is the healthier choice by default. Directness can be caring or careless, and patience can be wise or avoidant. The useful question is what you are protecting when you choose: the truth, the peace, or yourself.

How to use these

Read a few with a partner or a close friend and answer separately before comparing. Differences here are rarely arguments, they are just information about how each of you handles closeness and conflict.
